A Digital Flatbed Scanner

At the faculty room, a digital flatbed scanner HP ScanJet 5590 can help you to:
  • Scan pictures
  • Scan documents for editable text (OCR)
  • Scan documents as PDF files
  • Print copies
  • Scan slides and negatives
  • Save documents to CD, DVD or flash stick
  • Scan two-sided documents from the automatic document feeder (ADF).

How to Start?


Place the original face-down on the scanning glass as indicated by the reference mark and then close the lid.

Use automatic document feeder (ADF), if you need to scan multiple documents. Before placing an original in the ADF, check for and remove curls, wrinkles, staples, paperclips, and any other attached material. Place a stack of similarly sized documents face-up in the document input tray, with the first page on top. Adjust the paper guides to center the stack.

Option 1 to Start the Scan: Use Scan Buttons on the Front Panel


• Click on one of the buttons on the front panel:

You can scan as many pages or pictures as you need. When you are finished, click DONE button.

Software will open your picture or text or PDF document. The scanner saves all documents by default under Finder > Documents > Scanner Output. Select File > Save As to save on Desktop, Flash stick or put on CD/DVD.

Option 2 to Start the Scan: Use HP Image Zone


• Go to the Finder on the dockfinder.png


• Select HP Image Zoneimage_zone.png


• click the Devices tab, click on the one of the icons: Scan Picture, Scan Film, Scan Documents, Scan to PDF, Make Copies, and Preview Scan.

• Press the appropriate task button on.

• You can scan as many pages or pictures as you need. When you are finished, click DONE button.

Option 3 to Start the Scan: Use the HP Scan Pro software

• Go to Finderfinder.png


• Select HP Scan Pro software and click New Scan.

Select Destination: Image File, Text File, Printer or Acrobat 6.0 Professional.

You can scan as many pages or pictures as you need. When you are finished, click DONE button.

Print Copies


Use the COPY button on the front-panel of the scanner to scan an original and send it to a printer.

Place the original face-down on the scanner glass, as indicated by the reference marks, or face-up in the ADF.

Select the copy options:

– Select the number of copies by pressing the NUMBER OF COPIES button.

The number of copies appears in the front-panel display.

– Select how the original is scanned by pressing the COLOR button or BLACK & WHITE button.

Press the COPY button.

The copies are printed on the printer in the Faculty Room.

Cancel a Scan


Press the CANCEL button to cancel a scan in progress, or to cancel a series of scans when you are scanning from the ADF.
